Democracy in the World

Juan Williams: "China may be next".

-Martin Kite-Powell

The comment was made during At Large with Geraldo Rivera on FNC tonight. Juan (who works for National Public Radio and is a Fox News contributor) responded to the question from Geraldo of whether the Saudis or other non-democracies in the region would be our next focus of pressure.

It made me take notice primarily because Juan is not exactly a “right-winger” and while even most Republicans are still trying to be in China-denial (along with other forms of denial), Juan’s response gives one pause.

A lot of folks hope that economic ties will tame the tiger. I hope so. Not to mix metaphors, but there certainly is enough within China's communist government to represent a "Trojan horse" risk to the free world. While Juan might have just been being random, it should be obvious to everyone at State et al that China should be a major focus of US foreign policy pressure, economic, diplomatic and not only infiltrating their government, but saturating it, with pro-Democracy locals or direct US operatives. If we are going to create significant economic bonds with this country, we had better darn well not only know what's going on, but have our fat little hands right in the middle of it. But here's hoping for a **positive** cultural exchange between China and Taiwan :p
