Notes from the Garden Journal: A Day for Choosing

Hopes and promise on the verge of a new era in Iraq

-Martin Kite-Powell

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live… (Deuteronomy 30:19)

The day has finally come. Today Iraqi elections begin in just a few hours. No doubt security will be as good as can be, and barring some sort of major radiological or other mass event located in Baghdad or possibly one taking out a number of key officials, my guess is that all of Abu Zarqawi’s tantrums won’t succeed in interrupting the election and the galvanized resolve of the Iraqi electorate. In fact, any car bombs or shelling will probably steel the determination of this people once without guarantees of life or freedom.

For all the hundreds of thousands who have paid in their own blood and the blood of their children, the time for freedom has come.

Good luck Iraq – our solemn hope is that this be the first day of a new life full of kindness, honor, freedom, providence and  prosperity. If you stay true to these values, you will also win your peace.

May God bless you in this new beginning.
