Habitat for Humanity

Today I had the honor of participating with Habitat for Humanity in an exciting and worthwhile cause – giving shelter to the poor. I spent the day helping a team of about 30 or so do our part in literally building a house from scratch just north of Dallas.

The experience was educational (I had never before done anything like it) and interesting. Part of this was learning just how Habitat works at this level. For example, those who will be moving into this house have agreed to invest several hundred hours in helping to build other Habitat houses and in exchange they receive a 0% interest loan on a home built by mostly outside volunteers at substantial cost savings.

While Jimmy Carter and his ephemeral presidency may be a doubtless dolt about a great many things I think at least in such efforts as this one he may have also found his halo.

As an aside, you probably noticed my absense from the blog this week. I should be back to more regular postings in the coming days.
