Esto es tan estúpidamente surrealista que ni siquiera resulta divertido: un puñado de gringos y sus acólitos, que sólo hablan mal inglés y que no saben absolutamente nada de México, menos comprenden, intentando imponer por la fuerza a sus vecinos del sur soluciones foráneas que no han conseguido que les funcionen en casa.

Generaciones enteras de mexicanos aprendieron a leer con Memín Penguín a la par que eran cautivadas por su simpatía, su dulzura, su inquieta inteligencia y su conmovedora sinceridad y capacidad de amar. Memín les ayudó a adquirir valores humanos, a respetar la diversidad y a detestar la injusticia. Y ahora nos quieren reinventar la rueda encontrando odio donde siempre hubo aprecio y racismo donde siempre hubo cariño y respeto, en un clarísimo caso de «piensa el ladrón que son todos de su condición».

No son ni capaces de escribir correctamente el nombre de Memín. Tamaña muestra de cerrazón causaría hilaridad si no provocara antes profundo llanto.

Many kool aid-drinking Vicenté Fox supporters are upset that folks north of the border would actually consider Memín an offensive cartoon. Fox and his friends were seriously hoping they would get away with making bogus accusasions of racism whenever Americans complained about Fox trying to dump the poor, non-white Mexicans he so detests on this side of the border, and that no one would notice who the real racists are.

"Tonto" says Memín Penguín represents values such as respect for diversity and hatred of injustice. Tonto says this injustice against his much-loved little African-caricature was brought about by "gringos" (note the slur) who speak bad English, though Tonto wasn’t very comfortable making an attempt at saying this in English, obviously.

Sounds like a genuine respect for diversity and hatred of injustice right out of the horse's mouth to me, folks. "Tonto" may be a very fitting name indeed.

Incidentally, for the purpose of full-discosure it should be mentioned that "Tonto" hails from the Mexican Federal Electoral Institute (ife.org.mx).

Gringos is not an slur, it's just a word without negative connotations that people use because they dislike calling USA citizens 'Americans'. You know the whole "America is the continent" thing.

Canadians don't seem to have this problem, Waiv. Many Americans find "gringo" offensive and by virtue of the rule that states that a word becomes offensive to a group when members of that group are offended by that word, "gringo" is pejorative. If you don't wish to use the word "American" to describe us, how about "those guys up north in that non-racist, non-corruptly-led, prosperous country".

Maybe you can find a non-offensive acronym for that if you're really clever ;-)
